And Pokémon Sun and Moon are no different. Do we keep the amazingly goofy animation style? Does he grow and learn from his experience, or dump it all by the wayside when he travels to the next region? While that was a good thing in coming to Alola, the amount of growth Ash has already shown in just ten episodes isn’t something I want to lose like it’s nothing.Pokémon games are usually filled with interesting characters, Trainers and both friendly and not so friendly NPCs. But what I’m afraid of is what happens after he leaves Alola. If they never mention Ash’s other adventures at all for the entire run of the season, that’d be just fine with me.
#Pokemon sun and moon show series
The Pokemon Sun and Moon anime could very easily be a standalone adventure, or a series reboot. And as far as I’m concerned, that’s for the best. Ash might drop a hint to his past here and there, but aside from his occasional phone calls to Mom, this adventure will remain solidly separate from everything Ash has ever done. We are not going to face down Ritchie again or have an awkward encounter with Serena. But he shows that he’s willing to learn and try anyway, something he would never have done back when he was mocking Misty for being interested in fashion.įar away in Alola, there doesn’t seem to be much chance of running into references from past series. In Alola, he repeatedly recognizes that he doesn’t really understand the complex things people talk to him about. A recurring trope in the series (and one that’s played with in Alola, too!) is that Ash loves to battle his way out of problems rather than think them through. Credit: The Pokemon CompanyĪt the same time, though, Ash demonstrates a strange level of maturity that I haven’t seen from him before, either. Yes, I know, by the end of XYZ Ash had learned to appreciate his traveling companions, but this level of support and encouragement just seems several steps above and beyond that. He’s also an insanely supportive friend to those around him, especially Lillie. Rather, this young Ash is open and innocent, happy as long as he is with his friends, well-fed, and enjoying Pokemon. But it’s not the obnoxious immaturity he started out with in season 1. Ash is facing the world with a new wonder that he hasn’t had in some time.
Just watch the first episode, with his childish excitement about everything he sees. Yet in Alola, Ash is inexplicably ten again. That’s not nearly as interesting a moment for two ten-year-olds. The guy got a kiss from a girl he liked, for Arceus’ sake. Canonicity aside, I’d peg him at about 15, 16-ish just in terms of how he handles his relationships by the end of XYZ. I know the jokes about Ash’s age are still continuing 20 years later, but The Pokemon Company has taken pains to age Ash somewhat as he traveled. Credit: The Pokemon Companyīut the beginning isn’t all of it. Heck, after ten episodes, he’s only casually mentioned them once, and that was as a joking reference to his very first Pokemon capture. There is no mention of Ash’s old friends or adventures. Rather than watch Ash journey to the Alola region with Pikachu to begin some new training challenge, he’s there on vacation, and how he got there in the first place it told through a quick (and humorous) series of flashbacks that involve only a handful of other entities: his mom, Professor Oak, Pikachu, and Mr. The Pokemon Sun and Moon anime begins so abruptly disjointed from the rest of the series that it immediately feels like a standalone piece.
